THE PAINT JOB

For me, this stage has been the most complicated in all the project realisation - it was the first time I tried painting on wood and moreover I wanted to obtain a very smooth result and without any imperfections.

At the beginning I had been very badly advised about the products I have to use to prepare before painting and because of that I had to make severals attempts at the job and to try some various and different cements to get a worthy result. The watersanding wasn’t very easy too because the wood absorbed water in places and swelling causing the filler to crack.

In the end, the right method was like what follows: I changed the cement for polyester cement in several places in order to stop the large imperfections; then apply filler in order to stop the wood pores so that I could wet sand it without too many problems. This process has been repeated 3 times to obtain this result.

Here is the polyester cement I used. The label is Motip like all the other products and paintings used in this project.

Here is the type of paint I used. I used all products of the same brand to not have chemical reactions between different paint types.

Well I show you some sights of the stages of the sandpapering and masking job with the acrylic bands.

Once sufficiently smooth, I applied two coats of primer.

Before final painting, I still needed to drill the holes for the Pioneer DVD eject button. I made a push button from a piece of rubber and a glue stick from glue gun.

This push rod is placed behind the hole in the front and is cut to good size not to exceed the case surface (flush). The rubber piece takes his position exactly in front of the DVD drive eject button .
After much hard work sandpapering and three coats of matt black paint, you can see the result I got. The black is supposed to be matt but it gives an rather glossed effect?!?

I had succeeded in finding varnish which gives gloss a matt effect?!?

In the end, I find that this color ideally matches to contrast with the internal case parts\' brilliance.
